Once again republican politicians have been defeated by the people. In the West Indian nation, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, a referendum has been defeated, with 43.13% of voters opting for the new charter and 55.64% voting against. The constitution requires a two thirds majority to pass.
Both the governing Unity Labour Party and the opposition New Democratic Party support a republic but the opposition argued that the proposed constitution did not sufficiently reduce the powers of the Prime Minister.
