Apart from attempting to ban the Royal Anthem when The Queen opened the Commonwealth Games, the major republican campaign this year has been for “A Mate for Head of State.” This was the subject of an ACM Special Report of 13 August 2006 which was published in the The Australian Constitutional Defender, 2006 Issue No. 4 Our assessment was that this campaign was an embarrassing failure.
Now, SIR DAVID SMITH, the distinguished former Secretary to Australian Governors – General & author of the book, “Head of State” and DR HELEN IRVING, from the University of Sydney Law School & Historical Consultant for Film Australia’s documentary “Federation 1999” will discuss the theme “A Mate For Head of State?” at 5.30 for 6 PM on Wednesday 24 January 2007 in the Dixson Room, State Library of New South Wales, Macquarie
Street Sydney. This evening will be under under the auspices of The Sydney Institute. Incidentally, The Institute, its director Dr Gerard Henderson and Dr Ann Henderson played a major role in the “Mate for Head of State” campaign . A review of Sir David’s book, Head of State, was published in this column on 11 April,2006. To date, it has not been answered by the republican movement.
Bookings may be made from 10 January,on (02) 9252.3366 or 7 (02) 9252.3360 or by email to [email protected]. The evening is free to Associates of The Institute & their partners, for students, $5, and for others, $10.
