In the first part of a three part address the Hon. Michael Kirby AC CMG shared a number of anecdotes about his childhood and his exposure to the symbolism of The Crown during this period.

Mr. Kirby then recalled his recent visit to the palace, where it the comparison with a prison resonated in his mind.

"As I went in and the doors slowly opened and the cars moved through and the doors slowly closed and the guards were there and you were sought of ushered through, it really brought home to me that The Queen lives in a wonderful house and she has wonderful paintings, but it's a kind of prison – a prison of duty.  And she has accepted that," he said.
