History and the ABC

RAF Spitfire Most adult Australians have been horrified by reports that history is not being adequately taught in all of our schools. A reader tells us that the ABC National News on the weekend of 17 and 18 September, 2006, reported  that an Australian Fighter pilot from Cowra had the highest kill rate (14) in the Second World War of all "non British"  or foreign pilots. But at that time, Australians were British subjects. Separate Australian citizenship was not introduced until 1949, and our status as British subjects continued well beyond that. In response to our reader’s telephone call,  the ABC newsroom said that “anyway, we have pulled the story. It is only of local interest”

Our reader also tells us he heard Guy Fawkes described on the ABC as the first suicide bomber. There is no evidence that he intended to be in Parliament when it was blown up, and in any event he was hung drawn and quartered
