The Queen’s Birthday weekend is now widely regarded as irrelevant, according to some in authority, writes Tom Daly of Green Point, NSW in a letter published in Sydney’s Daily Telegraph on 27 May, 2009 under the headline, “ It’s our tradition”
“This may be the case,” he continued “ but the reasons given for its proposed demise are a little worrying – it does not sit well in our multicultural country"
“When will Australia put its hand up and say we are young but we do have some traditions?
“It would be appreciated if those who come here accept this. Those who want change usually do so, to suit their own beliefs.
“If we were to adopt all the traditions of the immigrant lands of origin, it would not be long before our treasured Australian ways would take a back seat to other cultures.”
