The Queen formally opened the new session of of the UK Parliament, in a colourful event on 8 May,2013.
The occasion is steeped in tradition and customs dating back centuries. This is very relevant to Australia. Among the many institutions adopted in Australia and then Australianised, one is the Westminster system.
The Australian Crown is at the very centre of our system. The republicans were given carte blanche in 1999 to come up with their model and they failed. It is impossible to graft a politicians' republic onto our constitutional system and not damage it.
