The Australian Prime Minister Mr Tony Abbott, accompanied by Mrs. Abbott made his first visit overseas visit to Jakarta on 30 September 2013. He was received both at the airport and at the Presidential Palace with a guard of honour. There was a nineteen gun salute at the Palace as befits a Head of Government. Only Heads of State – such as the Governor-General of Australia – receive a twenty one gun salute.
He said that he had had a "very frank" and "constructive" discussion about people smuggling during a bilateral meeting with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in Jakarta last night. The President is the executive Head of State, and thus also the Head of Government.
