Prince William and Prince Harry talk about their military roles

Prince William wants to serve in Afghanistan. “I didn't join the forces to be mollycoddled or treated any differently, “he says in the video below. “As far as I am concerned, in my eyes, if Harry can do it, then I can do it.”

“As a future head of the Armed Forces it's really important you at least get the opportunity to be credible and to do the job I signed up for the best I can. That's all I have ever wanted.”

When told he seemed to suggest an operational role was not an impossibility, the Prince replied: “In my mind, of course. If you talk to everyone else it's impossible. I still remain hopeful there's a chance.”

He and Prince Harry were being interviewed by the media ( “Brothers in arms: Prince William says ‘I want to fight in Afghanistan’, as Harry reveals ambition to return to war zone,” a report by Rebecca English in The Daily Mail, 19 June 2009, where several photographs may be seen. A Special Armed Forces Day message from HRH Prince William of Wales and HRH Prince Henry of Wales.

Armed Forces Day is a celebration of our fighting men and women, and the immeasurable contribution they make to our lives and to the reputation of this Country.

Through centuries of service to the Nation, the members of our Armed Forces have established a record unequalled in the world.

They work selflessly with honour and distinction,  in the most challenging circumstances imaginable. As serving officers, we have the privilege of witnessing the living traditions, the courage and the professionalism at first hand.

It is humbling for us to be associated,  in a minor way, with something quite so exceptional.  This day also recognises the wider family: the veterans, young and old; the many volunteers who support the Cadet Forces so tirelessly; and – of paramount importance and sometimes forgotten – the families and friends  whose care and support enables such excellence. We are both so delighted to support this Armed Forces Day.
