Republican  politicians and the commentariat were beside themselves in pouring ridicule on the recognition in the order of Australia of the hero of Timor General Sir Peter Cosgrove and the former Governor-General Dame Quentin Bryce.

In this comment, Prof David Flint says that It seems sufficient time had apparently elapsed since they had to wipe the egg off their faces over their landside loss in the 1999 referendum when they had instructed the Australian people to vote for their preferred model for a  politicians' republic to replace our crowned republic.
